From May 24th to June 3rd Nakai Theatre will hold the 2nd HomeGrown Festival at the Guild Hall. Building on 2004’s wildly successful festival, the upcoming incarnation features 22 individual shows and involves over 80 Yukoners as performers, writers, and technicians.
“Brand new plays, Wheel Chair choreography, live razor calligraphy with a very big knife, interactive choose-your-own adventure “slam and rap”, lascivious puppet shows, there’s nothing as exciting as watching this many artists spread their wings at the same time”, bubbled Michael Clark, Nakai’s Artistic Director. “Homegrown was too much fun for everyone involved last time. It’ll be even more too much fun this year. There’ll be emerging artists working along side the favourite old pros. And they’re all taking such brave artistic risks! They’re really putting themselves on the line. It threatens to be a very exciting two weeks."
Featured creators include: Heather Jones, Moira Sauer, Michael Hale, Barry ‘Jack’ Jenkins, Gail Lotenberg, Celia McBride, Nicole Bauberger, Daniel Janke, Emily Farrell, Brian Fidler and Dean Eyre, to name a few.
Initial admission to each night of the festival is $8. The audience can move freely between the festival’s two venues, the Guild’s Black Box theatre and the OR (Other Room). Shows range from 5 minutes to 70 minutes in length. Audience members are encouraged to ‘clap with their wallets’ by putting money into each show’s busking pot. This money goes directly to the performers at the end of each night.
The HomeGrown Festival is presented with the generous assistance of Zola’s Café Doré, The High Country Inn, the Yukon News, Government of Yukon – Tourism and Culture, Yukon Cultural Training Fund (CITF), Lotteries Yukon, Culture Quest and the Canada Council for the Arts.
