Play Development
Developing Yukon theatre artists and telling our stories on stage has been Nakai’s charge for over 26 years.
Nakai is committed to working with emerging writers and has a strong Play Development Program which consists of four key activities:
- The Nakai Writer's Circle. … Past Writers in Residences include Sally Clark, Patti Flather, Mitch Miyagawa and Celia McBride.
- The infamous 24 Hour Playwriting Competition and Cabaret. Now in its 20th year. 20 or more playwrights are locked in a hotel, fed coffee for 24 solid hours and forced to write. Two weeks later – it’s Cabaret time! Hear the scenes from the 24 hour plays, see the prizes awarded, vote for the People’s Choice Award and Party! This year’s competition will be held on November 4-5 at the Gold Rush Inn and the Cabaret on November 18.
- Yukon's Writer Festival's Playwright Workshop
– every year, Nakai hosts a nationally renowned playwright to hold a week long workshop for local writers.
Last year, we had the honour of welcoming Governor General award-winning playwright Colleen Murphy.
- PlayLab. The PlayLab series of workshops gathers a dramaturge, directors
and professional actors to vigorously workshop pieces in progress by local writers.
- Resource Centre. Nakai Theatre also runs a Resource Centre for theatre artists in our offices.
Artists are welcome to visit during office hours to use the computer and our research materials, including scripts and various theatre publications.
